Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

The Library has begun "pinning" on Pinterest. Check us out for book recommendations, cool technology and gadgets and other cool library stuff.

Flying Books Spotted on the Internet!

Moonbot Studios, based in Shreveport, LA, has produced a short film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, which has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Animated Short Film category.  The fantastic story of a love for books also draws inspiration from the events of Hurricane Katrina, "The Wizard of Oz," Buster Keaton, and silent film.  The animation, created by the illustrator, William Joyce and co-director, Brandon Oldenburg uses a hybrid style of computer and traditional 2-d animation and minitures.

Nursing Education in Video Now Available

Nursing Education in Video is now available on a trial basis from computers on campus. It would be extra helpful if students and faculty could take a peek at these video offerings and let the library know what you think about them.

From the Nursing Education in Video website:

Nursing Education in Video is a unique online collection of videos created specifically for the education and training of nurses, nursing assistants, and other healthcare workers. All of the videos in the collection have been created with the guidance of the Medcom-Trainex advisory board, and are regularly reviewed for accuracy, currency, and compliance with US Federal regulations from agencies such as OSHA and CMS.

This trial of the new resource will expire on March 9th, 2012, so be sure to give it a look before then.  Remember, these videos will only be available on campus computers, so you'll have to visit campus to access the trial.

The videos can also be viewed on a mobile device such as a smartphone, but you still have to come to campus to access the site to get the video link.  More information about viewing the videos on a mobile device is available here: http://ediv.alexanderstreet.com/help/view/using_your_mobile_device.

Welcome to a fresh new semester

Hello blog readers, and welcome to the start of the Spring 2012 semester.  We've made some changes around here so both new and returning students will all find some things unfamiliar at the library this semester.

First off, the most obvious change: our general hours are different starting this semester.  The Library Commons will no longer be open on weekends.  The main library's weekend hours have not changed, and it does have all of the same resources.  As a reminder, those hours are: 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 1pm to 9pm on Sunday.

The next most obvious change at the library is not actually here on campus.  When you need to log in to the library databases from off campus (or from the campus wireless internet) you'll now do so through the Portal.  The icon for the databases looks a bit like three blue disks stacked on top of each other in the Portal launchpad.  The library website log in will no longer work from off campus, but when using our computers does still provide a faster way to get to the databases without having to log in anywhere.

New students will find it handy to know that copies of most course textbooks are available on reserve behind the desk in the main library.  To check out a book that's held on reserve talk to the staff member at the desk.  You'll need to leave your keys or your college id to sign out a book, which then can not leave the library.  It can go next door to the Commons, as that is still part of the library, but can not go with you to class or anywhere off campus.

Study space, computer labs, and printers are available in both library buildings.  Study space can not be reserved in advance or by leaving items in rooms when leaving the building.  When using the library computers to print, select "studentprinters" from the drop down menu to print to the server.  Your print job will be sent to the server from which all printers pull jobs when you log in with your Equitrax PIN.  You ought to have your Equitrax PIN in your email, but if not just ask and we'll help you track down the number.

During all of our open hours you can get library assistance through the online Meebo chat box on our main library page.  It is staffed by library employees who can answer most of your library related questions.  Should you need help and there is no immediate answer, we're just busy at the moment and will get back to you as soon as we can.  If you leave your name and a way to contact you, we'll get back to you even if you step away from the computer.  If you find yourself in need of one-on-one research assistance, you can also make an appointment to speak with a librarian by calling  768-1730 or by emailing Library@ololcollege.edu.

Food trucks are continuing to serve at the library during lunch.  Today we had the wonderful Nice Dog Hot Dogs in the Commons parking lot from 11am to 1:30pm.  Other food trucks will be serving lunch on different days throughout the semester, offering a range of food options.  You can find up to the minute information about which food truck will be around and when on the library's Twitter account.

Change in hours between semesters

Hello all!

The fall semester is ending and I hope that everyone has done well on their exams so far and looking forward to the winter break.  The library is going to be open shorter hours over the break.  The reduced hours will run from Saturday, December 10th through Friday, January 6th.  The library will be closing both buildings at 5:00pm Monday through Thursday; open normal hours on Friday; and the main library will be open normally Saturday and Sunday, but the Commons will be closed.

Fall Break

Good morning everyone!  I'm sure you're all excited about next week's short break in classes.  Fall break is a perfect chance to relax and rest up for that final stretch toward the end.  The weather ought to be excellent so I hope everyone gets at least some chance to enjoy their time off.

I know, however, that many of you are already on that final stretch and are working on finishing up exams this October.  In consideration of your needs and because we rarely close for holidays, the library will remain open with our regular business hours over the break.

Parking Lot and Safety Update!

UPDATE - Regular parking has resumed.

Attention Students, Staff and Faculty: The Main Library parking lot and front entrance will be closed due to structural damage.  However, both the Main Library and Library Commons will remain open during normal operating hours.  You may continue parking in the Library Commons lot, and you must enter and exit the Main Library through the back door.  You can call the Main Library front desk if you have any questions at 768-1730.  Thank you!
